You can use silicon to secure the escutcheon to the floor. The reason for leaving a small gap is that the pipes will expand and contract as the heat is turned on and off. The gap will prevent any friction between the two items. If they do rub, you will hear the rubbing every time the pipe changes temperature. Share.

After watching a few online videos just to make sure I was doing it right I used clear general purpose silicone sealant as I pushed the copper pipe into the outside wall and around the backplate, I also used it inside to stop any creepys from coming into the house.

In our case I chased relatively deep (the walls are 9 inch solid) and set the 10mm pipes in expanding foam with some 20mm oval electrical conduit around. Mar 31, 2016 The owners response was to apply Silicon Sealant around the pipes. To me this feels wrong; silicon sealant gives off a strong smell of vinegar which is acidic. Putting an acidic gel in permanent contact with a hot copper pipe seems to be asking for the radiators to be found one day severed from the heat source and a very wet floor!
