Aug 27, 2018 Alclad 2 Polished aluminum questions. OK - first time using the stuff and it's driving me more nuts than I already am. I used Tamiya TS-14 gloss black as an undercoat and got a good result. Left it to dry for a day or so but in handling the model the aluminum rubbed off.
Once you have the black and gray glossy surface the way you want it, spray the translucent Polished Aluminum (105),Chrome(107), or Airframe Aluminum(119). Pre-shade over the Tamiya Silver Leaf Spray TS-30 with any of the Alclad II darker, regular shades.

Will the tamiya adhere ok to the alclad, or will it be runny (like spraying on bare plastic) or something else?

Oct 19, 2009 Alclad's "high-shine" finishes are the ones that require gloss black underneath. So Chrome, Polished Aluminum, Airframe Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Gold and Brass. The regular finishes (Aluminum, Duraluminum, Steel, etc) just need grey primer to protect the plastic, and it's recommended to polish them smooth with 1000+ grit sandpaper.

This is the first time I tried Alclad Polished Aluminum, but I had used Chrome for Plastic prior to this, and was always disappointed, especially with the product's lack of durability (it was easily removed with just my fingers). However, the Alclad Polished Aluminum, is a much better product, and it actually shines without buffing.

Jan 12, 2021 Only my opinion: Based on experimenting the Alclad 2 metalizers , #105 and #107, (in spite of their "aluminum" and "chrome" designations) reasonably represent polished Austenitic stainless steels on our fluted passenger rail cars (as long as the basecoat is not black). The 107 yields a very high sheen, while the 105's sheen is less brilliant, as is the depth of reflectivity.

Jan 08, 2015 Alclad recommends not to use decal setting solutions without sealing the finish first on the high shine finishes only. As I stated before, Solvaset is very strong and it did not affect the finish of any of my models . I recently completed a 1/72 Cutlass in Alclad polished aluminum and used tons of Solvaset to snuggle down the old Fujimi decals.
Alclad II has returned with several new clear finishes. The first is their Aqua Gloss which is a water-based clear coat alternative to Klear Kote Gloss and also used as the intermediate coat over flat finishes for decaling. The Aqua Gloss looks milky, but dries clear.

Mar 09, 2002 Alclad causes much discussion on the correct way to apply. Model master white acrylic works fine from my experience. Polished aluminum must be applied over acrylic gloss black and chrome must be applied over enamel gloss black. It does work over other bases but the best results are found following the directions included with the bottle.

May 06, 2012 I recently tried a friend's method of using a mix of 30% Tamiya gloss black acrylic and 70% Metalizer thinner as a base for Alclad. I used Alclad White Aluminum and regular Aluminum over it, and didn't have any problems at all, and the results were some of the best natural metal finishes I've had in a long time.

Dec 03, 2014 2) Other colors that you may wanna consider depending on the type of car you are doing would be aluminum, magnesium, and stainless steel. 3) I don't use acrylics so I can't compare to those paints, but lacquers dry faster and are typically more durable than the enamels that I've used. They also spray very nicely.
Jan 12, 2015 I've never had any issue with the Alclad white primer, but the last time i've used it was more than one year ago (Bell X-1). I use the grey one very often, but i think i will get back to Mr Surfacer, as the Alclad one is really too much granular. It's very useful to have an airbrush ready primer, but i'd prefer a smoother one.

Aug 22, 2018 If its not too bad than polish may be worth doing. You will need to keep it polished though...its not a one time thing. Another thing to be aware of is that the skins were originally alclad. Its an aluminum alloy coated with a thin layer of pure aluminum for corrosion resistance.
